I can understand people gold plating the 1883 Liberty Nickels....but I have a 1911 Racketeer nickel. The problem is that is has "Cents" on the back...doesn't this ruin the purpose? Did people continue gold plating them back then or is this a new thing?
I have not heard of anyone gold plating other dates with the exception of using them in jewelry. For that purpose, date is irrelevant.
The term Racketeer Nickel refers only to a gold plated 1883 Liberty Nickel Without Cents. Who knows why the 1911 was gold plated, as ND stated, it could have been for jewelry. Check the rim for evidence of it having been mounted.
