I found a 1973-D Kenney Half a few weeks ago with what appears to me to be a die gouge at the R of IN GOD WE TRUST that looks almost like an extra leg. I didn't think too much about it at the time, but set it aside anyway. Tonight I found another just like it and they have me wondering, is this any type of recognized variety?

It might have been the result of die deterioration. Can you give us a photo of the entire obverse?

It was put there by the Mint. If the first leg breaks, the "R" has a spare so it won't fall over. Looks like the extra leg, which is not clear but ragged, extends through the loop in the "R" and continues into the right cross of the "T". The trail also extends downward and stops under the "U".

The top coin is more pronounced but the bottom shows more debris. I believe the die filled with dirt and debris and you're seeing it on the coin. The shapes are basically the same but they have changed.

Highly unlikely! The area in question is raised from the surrounding surface, just like the lettering. And... two coins with identical PMD?
