I just want to see who's the first to get this: Name a United States silver coin of the 19th century that was minted with a plain edge - no reeding or lettering, and why.
Good answer. Not the one I was thinking of but it is right. You reason makes sense too. Any other answers?
20c piece was the first to come to mind. I wouldn't have guessed the reason without the previous post but it makes sense.
Capped Bust halfs had a lettered edge up until 1836. Oops.......just saw OPs disclaimer 'no lettering'.....
Double Dime is correct, and it was to differentiate it from the quarter. Another feeble attempt was made to make it appear different from the quarter. The word LIBERTY on the Double Dime is raised while it's incuse on the Quarter and other Seated Liberties.
The 20c piece and shield nickel both weigh exactly 5 grams, and their diameters are closer than the 20c piece is to the quarter. So basically it felt like a nickel and looked like a quarter. Doomed from the start.
