how do clean capital holders without causing damage to coin that is in it? i have used rubing alcohol on it already and i am worried the coins might be in harm.
Well rubbing alcohol is a bad idea because of the varied other chemicals it contains. If I were you and wanted to clean the holders themselves, I would first remove the coins. Then I would wash the holder in plain hot water and a mild detergent, using only your fingers to rub/scrub the holder. I'd be concerned that using a cloth would scratch the plastic. Then rinse very thoroughly, rubbing with your fingers all the while to remove any detergent residue, and allow the holder to air dry with the pockets for the coins facing down so any water could drain out. Use of any solvents would probably harm the plastic or lettering on the holder.
Are you only supposed to use distilled water or is that just a rumor? Nevermind, I was thinking about the coins.
Sound advice from the master at arms. If you're only concerned with scratches and such on the outside, there are many polishes on the market that work great.
To be honest I was thinking about the coins too - I was concerned with the possibility of detergent residue remaining on the holder, as well as tap water deposits. But, heating distilled water would be a pain, and I think hot water would be best to remove any dirt, smoke, grease etc etc from the holder. And so would the use of a detergent. But I think both would be necessary. Anyway, about the best you can hope for is a thorough rinsing and drying given the situation. In all the years I've been doing this, I can't ever recall this particular question ever being asked before. This was truly a first, at least for me.
