Hey, folks. I'm still very new to errors, and all the new information on them. I'm trying to learn as much as I can, and members here have pointed me to some great info so far. I'm curious though as to how much info on a coin is enough to deem it that coin. For example, if you find an error you have on CopperCoins, and all the doubling lines up in all the errors. It looks identical, but you're missing a die scratch, or other small imperfection... Is it possible it's just a different die state? Is that just a reference mark, or is it a necessity to classify that coin? Any info here would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

The first key to identifying varieties is to match the variety itself. Markers are useful to help confirm, but you are correct in your assumption that it could be a different die stage. Markers on coins come and go, but the aspect that makes it the variety doesn't change(though it can be weaker/stronger in some die stages).
