New to coin collecting this year and have been focusing on Morgan dollars. A recent purchase included dozens of Washington quarters. I'm still trying to learn about Morgan varieties and don't know anything about Washington quarter varieties or errors. I found five coins in the lot that had noticeable differences. I am looking for clarification if these are errors or common flaws. I'm also interested if they have any value. Will try to include some scanned images. 1. 1952-S with what appears to be a die crack through M in AMERICA on reverse. 2. 1957-D with extra silver connecting the 1 in the date to the bottom of Washington. It is also rotated about 10 degrees counter clockwise. 3. 1957-D with a doubled reverse. Looks like it was struck twice. The left wing edge (eagle's right wing) is doubled, the leaves on the right are doubled, most of the letters in UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and QUARTER DOLLAR are doubled. The obverse has a flake of metal lifting from the surface between B and E. The obverse is also struck slightly off center (rim wide at 10 o'clock and thin at 4 o'clock). 4. 1964-D with similar double reverse as the previous coin. It's also struck oddly. The reverse edge is low and flat and the obverse is high with a sharp edge. 5. 1964-D with die crack on obverse under profile. Thanks in advance for any assistance. Norm
I agree with the die cracks. I also see the cud near the date on the 57-D All of the doubling in the photos appears to be mechanical doubling. Now of course this is solely based on the photos. Without seeing the coin firsthand it is hard to tell for sure.
Thanks for checking them out. Still not sure if I have common coins or something of value. Is mechanical doubling common in the Washington quarters? Adds no value? Are ALL die cracks common in these quarters? I would think the 1952-S crack through M is less common than the 1964-D cracks on the obverse? I'm only saying this because I found a dozen 64-D's with similar cracks. Is the cud on the dates common (1957-D example)? I'm not looking to pay off the mortgage. However, I am very thirsty and near a soda machine. Diet Pepsi or eBay?
Well as these coins are silver, I would not suggest buying any soda with them. However, die cracks and mechanical doubling do not bring premiums. However, the good news is that silver is currently $7.70 an ounce. So look at 5 times face. Not bad for a quarter. Have the doubled die coins looked at by a dealer or well versed collector to be sure though. As I said, the pics look like mechanical. There are known varieties of doubling for some of your dates. Good luck.
