I couldn't find the answer to my questions in the ANA Grading Guide. How do the following affect grading: 1) toning spots (especially on proof coins) 2) debris/dark foreign matter on the surface of the coin, but not struck into/embedded into the surface 3) pieces of lint on the surface of the coin (but again, not struck into/embedded in the coin's surface)? Thanks for educating me
Toning doesn't usually bring down the overall grade of any coin unless it is unsightly or artificial, debris on the coin can render the collector value nil if it is bad enough, brinze disease or verdigris, PVC damage, these can make a coin ungradeable; some chocolate from a hershey's bar or something like that can be soaked in warm distilled water to remove it with no ill effects to the coin, so that has to be taken into consideration. lint can be blown off with canned air
