I have a few questions. First of all on the older notes do you keep them even if they aren't in good condition? I see 90's 80's and even some 70's on a pretty regular basis but don't usually keep them because of their condition. The 1969 $20 that I kept for instance. I kept it because it was in great condition. If it were tore or discolored or soft (not crisp) would you think it's a keeper then? I'm new to this so sorry for the question. Also what paper currency book would you recommend? I would probably just be collecting US small note at first.
KD... First and foremost collections are a personal thing....collect whatever interest you, thats all that should matter. I am sure we all have our reasons for collecting and the notes we choose are what we determine will fit into our/your theme. There are some hard to find small size notes from many of the FRB that are attractive in any grade. As an example older stars from the Series 1928 are difficult to locate in Gem condition. Even in lower grades they can be quite expensive. I use two different books, one to track my collection so I do not buy multiples of a note and one for greater information detail....my problem is that I kep the tracking book by my computer cuz I use it the most...I recently quoted some info out of it that was very very wrong!!! LOL So my book of choice for information is Schwartz/Lindquist 8th Edition Small Size Notes... Good luck!! RickieB
Thanks RickieB I catch myself going through my notes in my drawer all the time. I didn't know if I should save some of the older ones if they weren't in good condition. Also I had 3 $100 star notes the other day (not consecutive). The serial number wasn't anything special. I had saved them in my drawer cuz I was going to post asking about them on here before I gave them out but I never did and I think that they are gone now. Just don't know what I should be hanging onto. I'm not sure what I want to collect yet. Actually they all interest me. LOL
LOL...you will get along here just fine. There are many folks here with wonderful collections that will share what knowledge they have with you and others. I have learned a lot from them, and some of their collections are just superb! Pay attention and visit the fourm to get to know these folks....you will soon pick up many ideas I am sure! Good collecting to you for whatever you decide to collect! RickieB
I have some notes from the turn of last century and they are not in what I would call mint condition (Ok some are LOL) but sometimes that is all you can find but I will always try to find the best I can afford :kewl:
as a rule of thumb, the feds shred any note pre 1995 they find going through their scanners. So for a hint - those notes will be getting scarcer. I keep all i find, but i dont find the quantity you do. So i would keep the better condition ones, and the usuals like radars and other collectible notes.
