If you look carefully at the two shields of my Solidus of Theodosius II and 40-nummi of Justinian you will see what appears to be a man on a riding horse.

I wonder: is that supposed to be Saint George? Or is this an arbitrary horse motif that even existed before Constantine the Great? Anyone who knows?

And a drawing of Maurice Tiberius I found across the internet. Definitely not a contemporary. Look at the chest of Maurice, also Saint George.

So anyone here who can tell me whether the motif on my solidus and nummi is a Saint George figure or just an arbitrary man on a riding horse that existed before the Constantinian era?
