I have a NGC coin graded MS-66 and I think it should be 67. Do I have a better chance getting it upgraded by resubmitting in in the case or cracking it out? Thanks for your thoughts.

Howdy hamakua - Welcome to the Forum !!

There are two ways of looking at this. If you crack the coin out and submit it then it can be graded lower or higher. And unless you are quite good at grading yourself you will have no way of knowing which is more likely. So there is a good bit of risk involved.

If you leave it slabbed however and resubmit it then you can specify 67 as the minimum re-grade. If NGC agrees, it will be reslabbed at 67. If they do not they will leave it alone which will leave you with a coin in the 66 hoilder.

Thanks GD for your welcome and reply. I suppose that is a consideration. I am a raw novice completely baffled by the science of coin grading.

But I have six other MS-66 NGC graded coins and they all have several bag marks and dings while this coin has none. The only thing wrong with it that I can see is that the a in 'quarter' is partially filled in as if the die was broken. If this coin is 66, then I'd like to have six replacements like it for the others.

Grading is very subjective it is more of an art than a science. They do have guidelines but the final result is the opinion of the grader.

welcome to the forum. Nice ppl here it should be a positive experience.
