Question: Pre 1793 US Coins

    It seems as though 1793 is the earliest Modern US Coins. Its the earliest year I can find in price guides but I know US Coinage dates way before that. What were US coins like before 1793. Maybe some pics too. Thanks

    Actually, aside from a couple of 'pattern' pieces (1792) there were no US coins prior to that date, which was when the US mint was established.


    Previously, there were many different states coinages (mostly 1/2 cents and cents) .

    I strongly recommend purchasing a copy of the Guide Book of US Coins (the Red book). You will find many of your questions answered there.

    There is a US coin before the 1793's, the 1787 Fugio cent which was authorized by the Congress and struck by private contractors for the US government while it was under the Articles of Confederation.
