Hi all, First time poster, and with a question. I picked up some buffalo nickels at a garage sale, and it looks like around half of them have some rather deep toning. I read through a bunch of threads, but couldn't locate what I was after. I am a novice and not sure these are toned or just ruined. Some advice would be nice. :hatch: Here is a picture showing a regular colored nickel, a red-toned nickel, and a deep blue nickel (most of them have a version of this blue toning). Hopefully the colors are described correctly. Big version of image below: http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/327/3buffalostoning.jpg Thanks for the input! Karl
They aren't "ruined," but the toning doesn't look natural to me. If your going to put them in a Dansco album, they're fine.
It's difficult to tell from the photo's, I have seen similar toning on both ends of the color spectrum.
Any luster left to the coins? If they are low grade no telling, but frosty high grade coins might be okay. Not sure about the blue, but the red looks really flat. Not saying any of them are AT, but just making an observation. And a dansco album is fine for most coins.
Dark blue on nickel is uncommon. I wonder about this coin. Red on nickel is semi-uncommon, but you do see them that color from time to time, even on circulated coins. I'd like to see it in hand, but can't really go one way or the other. All IMO and based on my experience.
I don't like the color of the nickel on the right -- a little too dark, although it could be the angle of the photo. There are certainly Buffalos that tone a "gun metal" color but this looks darker than that. Coin on the left may be NT. Better photos would help (says the poster who has yet to post a single photo).
