I’m curious if anyone may have any idea about what’s happened to this nickel of mine. It’s a 1961 nickel and the back appears to have been mis struck. At first I thought it was just worn down smooth but it’s actually the same height as the rest of the coin’s raised edges and seems to perfect of a flat spot. It’s almost like the center part of the coin die was missing.
Welcome to CT @Desert1. When the photo of the reverse is enlarged, I see obvious tool marks on Monticello, so it was purposely damaged for unknown reasons. Just PMD.
It looks like someone of a younger age took a knife, ice pick, awl or something and scratched the Obverse and Reverse. The markss remind me of the scratches that were done to my 2006 SUV when I bought it new. Some one had fun on both driver and passenger sides.
