I tried to get a better photo of the doubling on this nickel, but to me, the doubling runs in both directions. Is this possible?
Machine doubling can be in various direction and vary from strike to strike. Just depends on how loose the machine is. Also, the nickels die suffer more from wear as the copper/nickel planchets wear the dies quicker. This is usually noticeable on the out side edge devices toward the rim. So you might have both affecting your coin. Just can't tell from the image.
