Does anyone know the composition of the black material that ICG is now putting in their slabs for an extra $3.00 per coin? I was wondering if sheets of this black material that is supposed to keep coins from spotting and toning for a long time is avaliable for sale? Is there a substitute on the market for this material, or could some suggest something that is for sale that is just as good for preserving coins? I understand the material is copyrighted, but there may be good substitutes. I have a lot on my coins in Airtites and 2"x2" hard plastic holders. I would like to protect my coins as best I can from moisture, etc., and anything else that might damage the coins in these holders. Thanks, Jim
Well airtites are a pretty good holder. Intercept makes several different holders also. The best advice I can give, is store your coins in the best holder, and in a safe environment. Cool and dark. Add a packet of silica gel. This will help soak up the moisture. You just have to remember to re-energize the gel every so often. Bake it in the stove, and it is good to go. Check how much space you need to neutralize and go one step up on that.
