Does this look like PVC or Corrosion on this auction? Not sure what it is. What about that stain on the reverse? I have seen red spots, but not like this. Just curious.
So you do not think that green stuff at 8 o'clock on the obverse is PVC or some kind of corrosion? What would it be?
Hmmmm... that's a toughie. My first thought was it was the holder, not the coin. But then the PCGS photo showed the same white spots - that indicates it's on the coin itself.
It's verdigris. I agree with Doug... this one is AU55, minus a little for the verdigris, net XF45. Rub in the hair over the eye, above the coronet, lower curls, high points of the leaves.
The red is a type of corrosion. Very common on old copper. The coin is one of the Randall Hoard varieties. The look is very typical of that hoard, and I suspect this coin is from it. Furthermore, I suspect the coin is MS as stated (and as per TPG standards and likely AU/XF as per EAC standards) and the toning/photograph are leading some to think otherwise. Respectfully submitted as my opinion, and recognizing the opinions of others may vary and are just as valid...Mike
