I recently came across some Air-Tite capsules in the 40mm size at a yard sale. However, they don't have the ring inserts. They are JUST big enough to put an American Silver Eagle coin into. So I tried it with one and am very glad I then thought to myself, "Hmm ... Okay, that was a tight fit getting it in. Can I still remove the coin?" So, first question. Is it safe to squeeze a coin like that? Does anyone actually store their Eagles in the 40mm capsules? It seems like a heck of an extraction problem, as well as potentially damaging to the coin's reeds (as well as the rest of the coin if you have to use tools to break the capsule away). Second question. I hate to waste things, so I'd like to use the capsules up on coins that they actually will fit comfortably with ring inserts. Which American (or Canadian) coins would fit into a 40mm capsule with a ring insert? Or, more generally, what does the ring insert that goes into a 40mm capsule reduce the inner diameter of the capsule to? This is what I get for going for a bargain! Many thanks.
I store all of my ASE in direct fit 40MM Air-tights and prefer those to any other air-tite. They are tight and getting them out is tough but can be done. Here is a list of air-tite sizes and what fits into them. http://www.air-tites.com/coin_size_chart.htm#.UYVDvqKG2TI I keep my Canadian Maple leafs in air-tites with the black ring but that is only because my coin store doesn't carry the direct fit for them for some reason.
Can you recommend a reliable method to measure air-tites? I have some I bought, but I got a bunch of different sizes and I'm not sure which are which now... they all came with inserts, but don't fit what I think they're for with the inserts, but seem too large without them. (was hoping to use them with ASEs)
