Hello all. I was wondering if anyone could help me identify if this is a error coin. From what I can tell...there seems to be no noticeable damage to the coin besides common wear. Did not notice any tool marks. The 1 and 9 are missing along with the "I" and half the "N". I have read something about grease being caught in the die when the coin was stamped. I'm just not sure how to identify this coin. Also...the edge on the left of the coin is noticeably thinner then on the right. The second coin is a Canadian 2006 No mint mark Magnetic Penny. I have read up on these coins and just wondering if I'm mistaken on what I have found. I'm new to coin collecting and started by coin roll hunting pennies. I have searched aprox. 12 boxes so far That I get from the bank. Canadian bank that is. Out of all the boxes...I have found 2 of this coin from the last 2 boxes I searched. I would also like to know if it would be worth the money to have the coin graded. Thank you for any and all help with my questions.
I can't comment on the Canadian coin, but the half dollar looks like it was struck through grease. That sort of thing is not all that uncommon, but it's unusual to the extent seen on your coin. No estimate of value; sorry.
Thank you for responding swhuck. I thought it might have been struck through grease. Just kinda thought that was a large area for a grease strike. I also was not sure about the ridge edge of the coin. Is offset like that common? I just started coin collecting and I have a lot to learn. Is there a site that anyone would recommend that for Canadian coins? I have checked several sites but, from the dates of post...no one has been active on several sites for a few months or more. Thank you in advance. cladhunter13
Also sorry for not knowing about the Canadian coinage, but I am willing to shed some light on the Kennedy. I agree that it looks as if it was struck through grease. My father-in-law has a Lincoln Memorial cent with the same sort of issue and had it graded. Going to shows in the Baltimore and PA areas, the understanding is that this generally common coin is worth about $300, but it was graded an MS-63. I would think that a circulated condition error would increase its worth, although maybe not to the extent of a higher-grade example.
Thank you DR Kegg for your info. I wish it was a higher grade. I would agree that there should be some increase in value. Just not sure on what it would be. I guess it would depend what a collector of such coins/error is willing to pay. In the books I have seen for the Canadian penny...they value the coin from 150.00 - 1200.00 depending on grade. I'm very new to collecting coins and have no real idea on how to grade the coin. If anyone has any input on possible grade of the penny...their opinion would be greatly appreciated. I'm currently searching 2 boxes of Canadian pennies. I have them all sorted by decade. I'm currently going through the 1980's. Already finished the 40's - 70's. I believe I pulled out a combo of aprox. 30 pre 1960 coins from the 2 boxes. I'm checking each coin as I go looking for any doubling. Not a easy task as I only have a 4x magnifier at this time. I just won a 45x loupe on ebay but, almost every single listing for such items was in Hong Kong with 7 - 21 days shipping to receive. Cant wait for it. So far I have found what I think is a 1979 Canada penny with doubling of the last 9 at the bottom right side of it. Kinda hard to tell with this 4X mag. I will try and take a picture of it and see if I can make it larger with paint.net or photobucket and post it. Not familiar with doubling or machine doubling but, I'm very willing to learn. I have also found a penny that looks like it was caught under another coin when the other coin was struck. Again...no good magnifier but, it has what looks like beads and maybe some lettering on the edges where the other coin was. It could also just be tool marks from someone beating it with some sort of round object. I will need better magnification to be certain. I will see if I can get any pictures of it and post as well. Have a good day.
Kennedy is struck thru grease and they do not get much of a premium at all. Canadian I dont know about. Wish I could tell you more. Good luck with your coin hunt!!
Thank you Duke Kavanaugh. I kinda figured on the grease strike. I have opened a new thread with pictures of the 2 coins I found tonight. Take a look and give me your 2 cents if you don't mind. Here is the link to the new thread. http://www.cointalk.com/t93482/ Thank you, cladhunter13
