    Hi there,

I have a question pertaining to 1927 D lincoln cents. I was sorting through some Lincolns today and these caught my eye. I have two types of 1927 D's.

One has what I would call "normal" placement of the mintmark, between the 9 and 2 of the date, and the top of the D is about parallel with the bottom of the 9.

The other variety caught my eye since while I was sorting them, I thought they were just 1927 plains. But on my second run through the coins, I noticed that there was a D. I have two of these types. The D is placed between the 2 and the 7, favoring the 2 side. It is also placed perhaps 1.5 to 2 mm below the 2, very close to the rim.

I found these quite odd, and haven't been able to find any reference to these anywhere. I googled and looked at many forums... and this seemed to have a nice following of polite, informed people... and thought I'd give it a try.

I haven't seen this on any other dates or even any other 1927's... just on the 2 pennies I received today in a lot.

Any and all information would be much appreciated.

If needed, I can add a picture, if I can find where the camera is ;)

    Thanks in advance

A picture would be cool. Mint marks were added to the finished die by hand with a mallet and a punch. I'm sure the folks doing that did this work tried to get the same spot on every die, but sometimes the missed and got it slightly off or tilted. Sometimes the initial punch was sideways and some are are punched over other mint marks, like a D over an S.

Sounds like yours is way too far to the right, and if you have 2 of them, they are probably from the same die. That's pretty cool. Again, a photo would be a big help. At most, this likely wouldn't really add a substantial premium to the coin, but it would be interesting and folks collect that kind of stuff.

I will post up a picture tomorrow. I'm not quite sure where the camera is heh.

Out of the thousands of pennies I have looked through recently, these 2 really stood out as being odd. Ah well, thought I might have had something :)

Thanks for such a cohesive and quick reply!

Here's a decent picture. The one in the center is what I term as "Normal" placement of the mintmark, while the ones on either side are the odd ones. Almost seems more dramatic just looking at the coins versus the picture...

    Hello

The mint marks on the coins shown are within tolerances for this type of coin, they can be in a little different places without being an error.
