2 days ago i received change and in that change was a dollar bill that was brownish in color. Didn't think anything about it until i examined it today. On the back of the bill you can see slight and i do mean slight transfer of some of the ink from the front plate. However looking thru a loupe i noticed that the back shows the embossed impression from the front plate. Has anyone encountered this and can it be an altered bill. Thanks for any info

I don't see anything that jumps out at me. The ink smudge on the back of the note is common, the color could possibly be from a day or two in direct sunlight.

OK i didn't think it would show up on photo's it's as if someone sprayed something onto the note and on the reverse side it's like braille you can actually see and feel the front plate on the reverse if that makes any sense. It's hard to explain unless you saw the note in person.

Feeling the front plate on the reverse is called embossing. It's something collectors look for on notes, especially seeing and feeling the serial numbers and treasury seal on the back of the note.

Is that good? I have a perfect, crisp 1928 United States Note $1 with the same thing.

I may take it to a coin and currency shop and get there opinion on it. Just curious as to what may have been sprayed on to it. I don't think they do any thing like that at the mint, but then i am new at this so who knows.

Get yourself a LED flashlite, and side-lite your currency.
The embossing should really stand out from the back.
It's also a good way to check for folds. This is a series 2003A $2 Atlanta Star note.
