I was wondering what various types of albums produced the spectacular toning seen on many coins today? Also, are these still available second hand? I'd like to fill a couple up and put them away for 20 years or so. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
From what I've read and heard, Wayte Raymond and, to a lesser extent, Library of Coins. I've had no direct experience with them though. With enough time, heat, and humidity, even Dansco albums will tone coins. I have some very pretty Ikes in a Dansco with rainbow rim toning.
The old Wayte Raymond albums tone beautifully. Of course, you have to put them away for 10 years or so. There was sulphur in the albums and that caused the beautiful toning.
Coinmaster Albums from the 70's will turn them a pretty green! (PVC) I have had coins in the Library of Coins for over 30 years and see no evidence of toning on anything. I have recently switched over to the Dansco so I can not say how they will do in the long term. I did have a circulated roosevelt set that was in the old Whitman quad fold. The reverses on those had toned a nice shade of BLACK!... Sold the set for bullion.
I have a Dansco album for ASE that I've had for about 2-3 years and already some of the coins are toning into a really nice rim/bullseye toning. Speedy
