Ok, here's the story: Starting last September I decided to pick up every coin I see on the street, or near a grocery checkout etc. I've also been checking any coinstar machines and vending machines I come across. It's suprising how quickly all this can add up! I've put everything I've found into a big mason jar and decided a few months ago I was going to use the proceeds to buy my first gold coin.

After 9 months I've managed to get more than $100!!! As of today I'm at $104.94. I figure it's about time to start shopping.

SO, I'm in the market for a gold coin but my knowledge of world gold is very scant. Silver and base coins I know but gold I've not been able to afford so haven't researched. Anyway, I'd like to buy a coin that meets the following criteria and would appreciate your advice as to where I should be looking.

    1) about 1/10 oz (fits my $100 ish budget)
    2) priced within around 20% of spot
    3) made for circulation and NOT as a bullion coin (so probably dated somewhere up to the 20's or 30's)
    4) a design which is as pleasing as possible

As for grade I'd be happy with a nice VF or XF. I'd also prefer to buy raw so my money goes further. I'm not really looking for a specific coin on ebay or a specific seller, more just the series that you think best matches my wants. I'm flexible as far as country etc, the design is most important to me.

Hopefully in the next few weeks I'll have a nice, effectively free gold coin to photograph and show to you all :)

Thanks in advance for the help!

    Were sovereigns circulation coins?

You can get a half sovereign from 120 or so years ago at around $100.

With a $100.00 budget I don't see any pre 1933 gold obtainable, unless you get a great deal on e-bay. You may with luck be able to purchase an American eagle bullion 1/10 oz coin from ebay for $80-$90. Directly from the us mint for a 1/10 oz bullion coin about $125.00 or $150.00 for a proof version.

i am going to start picking money from the street too.

    go here

    http://www.coinvault.com/

and look at the last coin for $95 its pretty nice from turkey and the dealer is reputable

if you are interested in sovereigns go on to ebay

i would strongly suggest that you buy ngc/pcgs slabbed coins unless buying from a reputable dealer. IMHO opinion its better to get a unc slabbed piece of gold for 150 then to get a similar coin in vf condition for 100. let me know if you need more help or have any further questions

    Excellent thread.

My employer here is looking for exactly this. Near $100 coins for near bullion.

In case the US financial situation collapses, he would rather have some smaller weight/value coins, figuring they will be easier to spend that a safe full of 1oz'ers.

I might load up on (10) 1/10's as well, just for the fun. World gold would be my choice.

i hope you are not serious about loading up on those 1/10 oz stuff especially with so many coins available. ducats used to go for about 100 in 63 about 6 months back havent really looked into buying those so i would recommend you guys check that out as well.

French 10FF coins in gold were issued during the 19th and early 20th centuries and would cost about $100. Also Swiss, Hungarian, Austrian, Belgian and Italian coins in the 10 denominations. I picked up a couple of French 20FF from 1808(Napoleon) and 1904(Marianne) recently for $169 each, just slightly under melt.

I was in exactly the same scenario last summer. I went with a raw Edwardian half sovereign. I didn't think it was worth it to pay the extra money for a fancy plastic tomb.

I'd recommend hitting up a show, regardless of what you choose.

Thanks a lot for your replies everyone. I think I'm going to be on the look out for a half sovereign. I mentioned this to my Mum on the phone the other day and she told me that when I was born my Grandparents bought me a full soverign but it went when our house got burgled :( I'll check the local shop the next time I'm in but I'll wait until I find a nice one rather than grabbing the first I see. It's a while until the next coin show in my area but it may take til then to get what I'm after and that's fine.

    I'm now at $108.47 :)

Check out the first three examples on this site to see what an Austrian 10 coronae looks like:

    www.olympusgold.com

A 10 coronae would be perfect for your price range. And don't let this site fool you, these coins are NOT worth $130 and up, not even in BU. I purchased a 1909 (the one-year type) for $90 in AU at a show a few months back, and that was when gold was even higher than it is now. Also, I think they have a pleasing design. The weight is just under 1/10 of an ounce.

My local B&M just got in three proof half sovereigns. I presume they're recent bullion issues but I'll check them out just in case. They're priced at around $120 so if they're older it'll be a really good buy. I'm most of the way through rolling up my found coins. :)

They're nice but that rev style is already super abundant in my collection (mainly German empire coinage), I prefer the St George design on the half sovereign. Thanks a lot for the reply though. I'll bear it in mind when I'm looking through stuff :)
