Here's a question I've always wanted to ask...for those of you who search penny rolls like I do..what do you look for especially? I separate the copper, keep out the wheaties and anything copper that looks UNC, weigh the 83's looking for another copper planchet 83 (I found my first one two weeks ago), roll them all back up, save the copper rolls and return the others. I also try and be on the lookout for errors like double dies. My friend also looks for the wide AM varieties, but I haven't tried this yet. Am I missing something I should be looking for? Do any of you have a special coin or variety you look for in penny rolls?
well, i don't look thorugh cent rolls yet but i will when i can drive in a couple years. i keep all of the copper cents i find since a roll has a melt value of $1. i don't look for 1983 copper cents, but i will probaly start. i also look for all the known errors that are in the redbook. i don't mess around with those errors on copper coins because they are not in the redbook. if you don't have a loupe yet, seriouly be thinking in investing in one. i just bought mine saturday and it really lets you see the coin in a way you haven't seen it before. my loupe cost $7, but there are cheaper ones that usually cost around $5. its just something thats nice to have while looking through coins.
I actually broke down and bought one of those OptiVisor things that's basically a magnifying glass built into a sun visor. Very handy for looking through rolls. If the coin looks promising through the OptiVisor, then I set it aside and loupe it later.
I check for the following: Wheats 1969-S DDO 1970-S Small Date 1972 DDO 1983 DDR 1984 DDO 1992 Close AM 1992-D Close AM 1995 DDO 1998 Wide AM 1999 Wide AM 2000 Wide AM
What I do is look for wheats, BU coppers, stuff like that. But, here is a good thing to look for. The thing I find a little often is look in the memorial on the 1984 cents. Sometimes if you are lucky, you'll find errors in that for some reason. Mostly die cracks, but still neat. I have found like 5 of these. They are neat to find. I also look for S mint coins. They are also awesome to find, atleast here in PA. Hope this helps and good luck. I mainly look through cents beacause to me you get a better pay out. You are almost likely to find a wheaty. I average about one every five rolls, one time it was one out of every two. One time I found a 1909 wheat. Hope this helps. Phoenix
In addition to the ones listed here I also look for: 1994 rotated reverse...I've found five, one of them is 180 degrees. the rest are 165 degrees, both clockwise and counter-clockwise. 1994 doubled die reverse ( fs-039.9) 1997 doubled ear 2006 DDO You might want to pick up "The Cherrypickers' Guide of Rare Die Varieties of United States Coins" fourth edition , Volume I. Or "Strike It Rich with Pocket Change" by Ken Potter and Brian Allen. Both books are very informative and have clear photographs, descriptions and rough retail values. I weigh the 1982's to keep the coppers. I haven't been weighing the 83's but I think I'll start. That one is listed in "Strike it Rich" with a value of upwards of $15,000.00. Very nice find!
Today on the Coin World website they are reporting a 2007 ddr. http://www.coinworld.com/news/cwhl.asp?uID=&hlID=4
Great!! One more variety to add to my searches. Hopefully Coin World will post a pic so we can see where the doubling is. I'm not the greatest at finding or picking out doubling. It has to be VERY evident for me to pick it out.
