Hi Folks Have a question in regards to a 1875s trade dollar and a 1830 bust half dollar. I have someone who wants to sell these coins to me. They are not graded. They have given me a price that they want for each coin. Just checking if anyone can give me an approx grade. The best i can tell is that they are on the lower end but i am not an expert. Sorry for the scans and that pictures are prefered but that is all i have access to. Sorry if this is in the wrong forum was unsure which one to post in. Thanks for any opinion and info.
We'll need photos to help you with grades. But one piece of advice regarding the trade dollar: don't buy raw. There are more counterfeit trade dollars than real ones. If you are not very sure of what you are doing, seek the help of a professional. Perhaps the fellow wanting to dump them on you...excuse me...wanting to sell them to you, will let you show them to a local dealer for an appraisal. If he balks at this suggestion, then run. Lance.
Not sure if the scans are throwing me off but both look cleaned to me and I would not pay much more than melt value myself. But I am a very picky type of guy.
The Trade (if genuine) looks as if it has "cabinet wear". Early collectors (before cards, folders and albums) stored their coins in cabinets with felt lined drawers. I have my grandfather's coin cabinet he made himself (circa 1910). The coins tended to slide on the felt and rubbed the high points of the coins. The Bust looks to have been cleaned many years ago. Perhaps when cleaning was an accepted practise.
Thanks. I've known the person who wanted to sell these coins for a long time. I 'm positive they would not knowingly sell a fake coin. Was just trying to help them out. They were able to sell them so everything worked out.
