Does anyone know anything about the bronze pennies. I visited Ken Potter's site and he lists years, but how do you tell for sure? I think I have a couple. this is just one:whistle:

Kens web site was the place to start, you can learn the cause and the years that most turned up. The problem with the "Brass Plated Cents" are that many were created in school labs and at home by people with extra time on there hands.
Ken just finished checking a 2003 that I found in a bank roll, problem is that there has not been any others for that year reported, so there is a good chance that it has been altered. I would save them for your collection and perhaps more will turn up.

I have seen a 1996 graded by NGC or ANACS with Brass list for detail at show a few years back.

    Right,

These coins have been reported by the mint as to being made that way. I just want some more info if anyone knows any.:)

The supposedly low number of brass plated cents would indicate that the % in erroneous composition was unnoticed until collectors started asking. The mint letter on Potter's site indicated that in the copper plating process, there were loose zinc planchet material in the plating solution so zinc alloyed with the copper to make brass. It doesn't take but microscopic amounts of zinc to change to the brass color. This should be a low occurrence situation as the solution should normally be cycled during the plating process.

However, what interests me a little is that if the explanation is correct, the color of BU Brass cents should vary slightly in degree of yellow color, depending on the amount of zinc alloyed. Perhaps a paper to be written by someone.

That makes sense about the coins. I think I have at least 4 of them. It is kinda hard to tell if they are unless you find a coin close to mint state. Other wise, time, dirt and other foreign debris can change the way a coin looks. Your a smart guy, why don't you write a paper.
