Hello - I have recently started collecting coins, and I decided to start out by just organizing my loose change. I have two '68 D dimes and I was wondering which one to keep. Dime A has more visible wear on the obverse - specifically, the first few letters in LIBERTY are worn down a bit, as are the parts of "In God We Trust" that are close to the edge. Dime B, however, is more clearly worn on the reverse. The torch lines are pretty much gone. Dime A still has some visible. All other things being equal, which one should I choose to put away? Is wear less desirable on one side of a coin than on another? Thanks!
Hi, cholmes. Welcome to CoinTalk. Just think you should know, that coin collecting is a wonderful hobby. You should always collect those coins that give you the most pleasure. Never, and I mean NEVER, let anyone else tell you what you should collect. Now, having said that, I will tell you that I collect coins from circulation (pocket change) too. I put them in folders that only show one side of the coin. I usually try to find examples that have a nice looking obverse, sense I put all the coins in heads up. I enjoy filling up folders this way. Other folks collect in different ways. The only thing that matters, is what's important to the individual collector.
Thanks. Right now, I have folders for all types except for nickels (I bought an album for those). I plan on starting with whatever change I come across, then when I learn more I'll move onto making actual coin purchases. Since my circulated dimes are going in a folder, I will put the one with the better obverse in it.
Sounds like a great way to collect. Also, sounds like you are getting started the right way. I have my very best, high grade, uncirculated Jefferson nickels in an album. I can enjoy looking at them easily that way. I also have lesser quality BU's in albums, too. As you move ahead, in your collecting, your ways of collecting may change, but for now, I'd say you are being very smart, and using your head.
I would keep them both.....One reason is that someday they might go up in value and then you would wish you had not sold it Speedy
