Hi all, I've recently picked up an interest in US tokens, and I've just ordered two books from Amazon on them: - Standard Catalog of United States Tokens 1700-1900 - Hard Times Tokens 1832-1844 I've heard it said here before "Buy the book first, then buy the coin". I found and read Clinker's post on Hard Times tokens. Great post! My question has to do with authenticity. Are tokens counterfeited just like coins are? To me it seems that tokens would be way easier to counterfeit than coins because they follow no standard manufacturing process like US coins do. I'm thinking in terms of planchett size and weight. Thoughts? Thanks! -StephenS
There is some counterfeiting of tokens but for most issues the values have been low enough and the demand base is narrow enough that it hasn't been worthwhile to counterfeit them. Now if you run into issues that are in the hundreds of dollars then yes there can be some concern about counterfeits
