Why are star notes worth more than face value sometimes? And when do you know if you have a winner? Lol

Star notes are replacements for the originals which were destroyed during quality control checks. Some star notes are part of large print runs and some are not. The star notes from low print runs are more rare and therefore usually more valuable.

You can check print run sizes as far back as Series 1981A on this website: http://www.mycurrencycollection.com/reference/star-notes/lookup

For older notes you will have to do a little research to find the print run numbers, if available.

I have several 1957 $1 silver certificates (*STAR NOTES*) in Unc. probably go
67 and above, the problem is they printed so many of these there only worth
about $30 if that, just because its a star doesnt automatically mean dollar
    signs.
