Question about removing or reducing marks from an eraser on a trade dollar

Hello all. I have an 1876 trade dollar. I would call it somewhere in the EF-40 to EF-45 range. The only problem is that it has a rather distracting mark that looks like it is from an abrasive eraser in an attempt to remove unattractive toning from the reverse. What I am wondering, would there be a way to reduce the appearence of the mark? Could NCS perhaps do something of this sort? Sorry, I don't know how to upload images from my camera to cointalk. Thank you so much in advance.

Not without artificially toning it, which might make the coin look worse and/or cause you to lose credibility if you were to sell it. So no.

NCS may be able to help, depending on how bad it is.

Are you trying to sell the coin? If so, it will be difficult to sell a trade dollar online unless it is in some kind of slab.

As far as uploading pictures, there are many fine threads on this subject. If you can't find one, basically you just move the pictures onto your computer from your camera. Then find a free picture hosting site on the internet. I personally use tinypic.com, but I know others here use photobucket.

Once you've uploaded a photo, you'll be given a url for the picture. Just put the URL here, and we'll find the pic. You can also use the forum format, and your picture will display here.

    Good luck!

Thank you. I am not looking to sell the coin, I just find the marks to be extraordinarily unattractive, taking away from the beauty of the coin etc. I would like to resolve this and just appreciate the coin.

Given the price of an 1876 Trade Dollar in EF, I wouldn't send it in to NCS, unless you're really concerned about the marks. This coin bids at $140, and spending $30 or more to have it looked at is really expensive.

Now, if you're going to keep it for a very long time, and the marks really bug you, then you might want to try it.

Really, though, if you post pics we can give a better opinion.

The marks do really bother me, so I believe I will be sending it to NCS. Thanks again to all.

There's another thread about how NCS majorly messed up a coin so send it at your own risk.

Don't know how to post a link but I believe you just posted on the thread. It's called, "how to safely, naturally tone a coin"

Hi Lafayette. I'll post any images for you if you wish. PM me if I can help.
Don't send to NCS before checking further. There is an ask NCS site that might be of help as well.

If the marks were caused by somebody using a pencil eraser on the coin - no, NCS cannot help. Nobody can help. Once a coin is worked on what is done is done and it cannot be changed. Anything else that is done to the coin will only compound the problem and make it worse.

Yes, you could thumb the coin and smooth the marks out. Yes, you could cover the marks up to a degree with artificial toning. Yes, you could dip the coin to the degree that the affected metal is removed. But none of these things fix the problem - they only create new problems that will be readily noticed by anyone who knows anything about coins.

There is only one thing that should ever be done with a problem coin that you do not like - sell it and get another one that is problem free.

I too think that there is not much that could be done. However, that depends on just how severly the marks are. If into the coins metal with scratches or running marks, it's too late. Sending to anyone would be just a waste of money. If it was my coin I would attempt to soak in Acetone for a few days. Not much to loose now. If the markings are just surface leftovers from the eraser, they may just come off. As I said though if it's into the metal, to late.

Their are no scratches. Just a thin section consisting of marks that are unnaturally smooth.

The people at USCG grading services sent me an email stating that their coin grading/conservation services would be happy to do this for me. Do you think I should give it a try? Thanks. You can visit them at:

Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. Just leave it, and if you don't like it, then sell it.

What would be so bad about trying them. It's them or NCS. Not many choices and therefore market competition.

No. Don't do it. Learn some more before you go that direction.

Posting images is really easy. Many here can help you with this.
