Lincoln's in the 1980's and '90s are sometimes found with what looks like a doubled rim. There is a raised portion of the coin often seen through the motto. What causes this effect please? I read about it many moons ago and have forgotten the answer. Is it just die wear or is it hub wear or something else? Thanks.

Die Wear. Coins that exibit this are in VLDS (Very Late Die State). The dies is close to retirement. Just a poor die creation for these year and still continuing with the single squeeze process. Lower profile. This would not have happened on the dies with the multi step hubbing process.

It's mostly attributed to die wear . It wasn't until the mid-80s that they started to fiddle around with single squeeze hubbing technology on Lincoln's.
