so i've decided to start collecting english hammered coins, and like the old saying goes, buy the book before the coin. i've noticed on several threads on here that the book "coins of england and the united kingdom" is recommended, but does it cover hammered coins? additionally, does it break down the silver pennies into classes and state what the differences in classes are? (ex- class 3d, class 10cf2, class 9f) additionally, what are some other books to look into that deal with english hammered coins of the medæval era?
mpcusa coins of ancient and midieval times were made by securing the lower die in something like a large piece of tree trunk, placint the planceht (flan) over the die and then applying the second die to the top of the planchet and hitting the die with a large hammer. Richard
Coins of England is a very good beginning reference, covering everything from British Celtic coins to modern bullion issues. If you want a better reference (particularly for the pennies of Edward I) go for J J North's English Hammered Coinage.
This is THE answer. The only thing I would add is that you need both, not just one or the other. And the North book, has 2 volumes.
