i've been reading quite a few threads about the old whitman folders and toning. i have my dad's old (original from the 50s) whitman buffalo nickel folder, and none of the coins in it show any toning. are only silver coins affected by the folders?

The toning given to coins from various holders depends upon storage conditions, methods of production and coinage metal. At least one of the recent threads discusses a striped toning pattern that can occur on coins from the glue used in some of the older paper albums. Newer albums are much less likely to have these issues. Also, the two-sided acetate slide albums tone coins in a slightly different manner and rate than the solid cardboard albums. Other album manufacturers have similar issues as does Whitman with respect to toning, but some characteristics of the toning can be attributed to a particular manufacturer.
