I saw a comment on another thread that brought a question to my mind. It was a gorgeous Indian Head Cent with a very prominent clash and the poster's comment was asking what the die had clashed with....... I understand that a clash occurs when a planchet does not enter the coining chamber. So in my mind a clash would always have to be a reverse image of the opposing die, wouldn't it?
Most often yes but there are exceptions. Look at the 1857 FEC Snow 7, 8 and 9 varieties. https://www.indianvarieties.com/what-is-a-die-variety/mdc-multi-denominational-clash/
Son of a gun..... Well, that creates a whole new batch of questions in my mind.... Thank you for that link. I am going to educate myself further on these. I had no idea....
It is pretty cool that 4 of 6 MDC's occurred in 1857 and even entails a conspiracy theory of sort.....
