Question about Canadian Coin Reference Guides

Been thinking about adding some reference guides to Canadian Coins to my library.

I have quite a few Canadian coins in my collection and definitely plan on adding more. I mainly use Coins and Canada as my reference site for these. I figure it is about time I got some actual reference books for my library as well.

I know there are big books on world coins that cover Canada but I am looking for something just for Canadian coins.

Is there a a book like the RedBook for Canadian coins and tokens and possibly a book that specializes in varieties and errors too?

Any recommendations would be helpful and appreciated.

    Thanks...Mont.

Mont - I believe if you browse the footnote links for attributions (and what not) at Coins and Canada that you'll find reference to many different resources. As to accessing them, it might be a bit of a hunt yet, but at least you'd have titles to trace with. Perhaps our Northern most members can chime in.

Thank you. I did find some reference books there. Had to look under links. Looks like the Canadian "RedBook" is called The Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Coins. It says this book has varieties too, but I wonder how in depth that part goes.

What I didn't find, except for the nickels, is a book that specializes in varieties. Kinda like the Cherry Pickers guide is to US coins.

I collect some Canadian coins also. Mostly silver coins and cents. I have a full book of the small cents and I'm working on a second.
I also have a few of the provincial varieties such as Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, etc..
I like the older silver 5 cent pieces, and I have quite a few Dimes and Quarters.
Mostly I have the large silver dollar types.
I don't use books because I'm mainly just a silver guy, not really a collector.
However, I do see where if you want to get serious about improving both your knowledge and your collections, the right books will be very helpful.

    Good Luck !!

The Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Coins. I have it and it's a very good reference for Canadian coins.

The Charlton guide is an annual and every year/edition they have a variety section in the back for a certain denomination and/or monarch. Always get the volume 1 of Charlton, as that is for circulating coinage. Vol 2 is for all the crap that the RCM puts out and NCLT. The 65th edition (2011) edition starts out with Vicky large cents and is the first written by major/serious collectors rather than dealers. You also have the Haxby book, a Whitman guidebook that covers both coinage and tokens .. it's a very good book, but don't know if it's annual ... only editions and the first edition is 2012. Probably some of the best references are going back through all the threads on this site, looking for specific answers to questions you may have .. there's lots of research here.

I've always liked the one pictured below, but in the French edition. It helps keep my French fresh and I get to use terms like "cuivre," "d'argent" and "or." This is the edition that the Canadian mint sells in their gift shops as well (in both English and French).

MontCollector: I too have been collecting Canadian coins since my grandfather gave me his small collection that he brought back from WWI. He was with Canadian forces then.

In addition to the "Monnaies du Canada" that Ewomack suggests, James A. Haxby has another reference book "A Guide Book of Canadian Coins with Tokens" published through Whitman one gets a lot of historical information on the coins and tokens. I find Canadian tokens as fascinating as the varieties of Canadian Victorian pennies.

OK Ed: Je veux que tu chantes l'hymne national Canadien en francais! If you are a Nordique hockey fan - pas problem!

Thanks all. I am going to order the Charlton Standard Catalogue to start with.

I took a look at these as well and it looks like the "Guide Book of Canadian Coins with Tokens" would be a good choice as well as I do collect the Canadian Bank Tokens. I will probably order this one too.
