Question about blank planchets

So I'm at my lcs today and they have a box of blank copper planchets and they are selling them 10 for 2.75 or something like that. Now, I had always thought there was a demand for these so I assumed they must be completely blank on both sides. I asked the woman if this was the case and she said that a guy came in with about 300 of them. His wife worked at a bank her whole life and she would take them out of the mint bags as they came in. I asked if they were just blank metal and she said that most are but some are just off center really bad.

So am I missing something? I thought that something like that would be rare/valuable. How do they have a box of them?

Anyway, remember, a picture is worth a thousand words. Remember, the Denver mint gives out free blank planchets to visitors who book a tour.

 

Anyway, yes, CLEAN THEM OUT! If I were you, I would go and buy the entire boxful.

 

I'm curious what's against the law?
The U.S. mint also frequently gives out these introduction to U.S. coinage packets to young numismatists at coin shows, etc and they come with a mint sealed blank cent planchet.

I'm going by tomorrow to look at them again. I'm gonna check eBay and see what people are doing with them.

 

Are they Type 1 or Type 2?
There is a difference and affects the value if sold.

 

Probably a mix. I don't know.

 

I would get a bunch of them.. Type 2 are nicer

The off centers I would pay $4 at least. The blanks, maybe $1-2.

Whatever you do, do not pay Redbook error price. Their price guide is a little high. Ok, a lot high! Also, in his pm, he said he wasn't sure that it was 10 for $2.75!

 

My LCS charges $9.50 for off center strikes. But as they say, you can always charge a price, but it doesn't mean you'll sell anything! And yes, $9.50 is way too high!

 

I'll find out more tomorrow. This shop doesn't have much interest in errors or varieties so they may be trying to sell them for cheap. We'll see. I'll post here how it goes.

What I mean is that if you don't know much about something you are selling, you will probably greatly overcharge, or undercharge!

 

Went by today to see what the price was and they were 10 for $10. No off centers to be found. I think I got all type 2's and I grabbed the only brown one. The rest were RD. I just got 20. Cool to have anyways.

 

Ok, got a question. Most of them have a rounded rim but a few of them have a 3 sided rim. I looked through some regular pennies and a 2005 had the same edge. So does that matter at all?

 

Are they all Type 2s ?
