I have a 1942 P MS65 walking liberty half dollar in a pcgs slab. It is a DDO 001 but the slab doesn't show that. When I went to pcgs site it looks like they don't attribute that error or year at all. I would like to get something on the slab that shows that. Elven if I could just send it to another company that is well known that can put something on it saying it is DDO 001. When I bought the coin from my lcs 6 months ago I paid $125. They sell for much less on eBay so I overplayed by a lot. I think you can get one on eBay for around $85 slabbed MS65. I was able to find only one coin that sold like mine and it sold for $160. NGC shows only 1 MS65 DDO 001 in population, 2 MS66 and 1 MS67. So I think it's worth it to try and get the error noted on the coin for when I do sell it one day. I've considered just hanging onto it and hoping pcgs decided to add that attribute to their list one day, but if there is a way to get it done now then I'd like to do that. I could always just send it to NGC but I want to make sure that's the best way to go.
I think you pretty much summed up the choices: wait for PCGS to add it to their variety attribution list, or submit it elsewhere (NGC being probably the best choice). If you want the variety on the label, I'd say off to NGC it goes!
I would wait. I don't feel it's worth putting more money into it. With that said, PCGS may do it for you. It's listed in the CPG.
Sure they do. Image below. I didn't know they pick an choose. I thought if you paid the extra fees they researched it and put it on the label.
That is the only Walker attribution I could find that they do. I don't understand why that one is so much more desirable....I guess coins are just like anything else. Some things are "hip" or "in" and some things aren't.
The coin you mention is at a working hub variety-found from more than one Mint and more than one die so it is common and won't be attributed by either PCGS or NGC tho ANACS and/or SEGS may attribute it. As to the ones that ARE attributed by the two "leaders" there are three major ones that I'm aware of-the 1942 REVERSE shown above, the 1946 reverse, and the strongest of all-the 1936 Die # 3/FS-101.

I don't do Walkers, so I wouldn't know first-hand. This is the list of what PCGS says they attribute, copypasta'd from their website: Half Cents (1793-1857) by Cohen numbers Large Cents (1793-1814) by Sheldon numbers Large Cents (1816-1857) by Newcomb numbers Half Dimes (1794-1837) by Logan/McCloskey numbers Dimes (1796-1837) by John Reich Society numbers NEW Liberty Seated Dimes (1837-1891) by Fortin numbers Quarter Dollars (1796-1838) by Browning numbers Half Dollars (1794-1836) by Overton numbers Capped Bust Reeded Edge Half Dollars (1936 – 1939) by the Dick Graham (GR) numbers Liberty Seated Half Dollars by Wiley-Bugert (WB) number Dollars (1794-1804) by Bolender and Bowers/Borckardt numbers Morgan and Peace Dollars (1878-1935) by VAM numbers (Includes TOP 100, HOT 50, and Hit List 40; see list) Gold Quarter Eagles, Half Eagles and Eagles (1795-1834) by Bass/Dannreuther numbers Fivaz-Stanton Varieties from the Cherrypickers Guide, Fourth Edition Vol. II and Fifth Edition Vol. I (see list for exclusions) Apparently they don't know they attribute Walkers either; it must be included in the final item on the list. I'm not surprised. Edited to add: Yeah, they must be included in the last item because the list of exceptions has Walkers on it.
Oh....so they will attribute it? http://www.varietyvista.com/CPG Varieties liberty walking.htm It shows up as FS-101 on that list.
Be aware that variety designation is very expensive, at both services. If you've already overpaid for the coin, do you really want to add another $50 to the cost of your coin (shipping, certification, variety attribution)? The value added will be minimal, but the cost as a percentage of value will be significant.
I thought that if it was already in a pcgs slab then it was only $15, or close to that, to add the variety to the sticker?
At minimum, you'd have to pay for a reholder ($12) + variety attribution ($18) + shipping/insurance ($XX).
As Paul said above, its at least $30, plus shipping and insurance (which is often $15 or $20). That is assuming, of course, that you are already a PCGS member with submission privileges (if not, its another $69 for membership).
