hello peter, I don't collect stamps, as I have my hands full putting my Jefferson nickel collection together.

 

The easiest way to tell the difference is to look at the ends of the steps. On the rev of '38, the steps just end. On the rev of '40, there is a vertical line at each end of the steps.
