Howdy y'all. I was just wondering if anybody here knows how long after the release of the 2008 burnished silver eagle that the "word got out" about the reverse of 2007 variety,........weeks? Months?

Was just curious and hope somebody knows.

    Thanks kindly!

    It was pretty quick. Days...
I had just got mine via first round subscription, and only had them a day or two before I knew to look at them.

They found out about it in 2007 or earlier. That's when they made the dies. Don't you know that the Mint did it on purpose just to encourage people to buy the 2008 SAE's?

NGC initially reported on the Hub Differences in this News Story Date 1/9/2008 - http://www.ngccoin.com/news/viewarticle.aspx?IDArticle=955

The coins themselves went on Sale on March 13th, 2008. Via Subscription, my 10 were shipped on 3/27/2008. (This pretty much coincides with all the initial shipping dates)

On 4/20/2008, a fella named John Nanney (PCGS forum handle halfhunter) reported that the two he received, which were shipped on 4/8/2008, were both the Reverse of 2007. These were submitted to NGC and NGC gave John the credit for the Discovery in the following April 18th NGC News Article which was amended by NGC on 4/21/2008 because Coin world stated that John had notified them of the differences on April 15th. ( http://www.ngccoin.com/news/viewarticle.aspx?NewsletterNewsArticleID=465 )

He posted the question regarding the reverses in this thread http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=26&threadid=651801 on April 14th, 2008. I do not know if this was the very first post regarding the coins but on April 20th, 2008, a "mega" thread ( http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=26&threadid=652760 ) was started showing some of the first sales at $800. I do not know if that was per coin but I expect it was for multiple coins since sales at the time were about $250-$300 each in open bidding on eBay.

After that, things kinda took off. I know I submitted multiple orders around the 3rd of May and scored a couple then ordered some more. I ended up with a total of 7 but my initial 10 coin subscription contained zero.

Coin World had a big write up in the May 5th, 2008 issue ( http://editions.amospublishing.com/WDCN/default.aspx?d=20080505 - for those that have online access) which was probably released during the 3rd week of April which really got things going.

It was fast and furious with everybody ordering from the US Mint during all of May and June. Some scored while others didn't.

My regret is that I didn't extend myself by ordering a box of 100 since I spent the rest of the year ordering 2008-W SAE's looking for more.

I would guess that it took about 3 weeks from discovery to a tidal wave of sales to occur.

Question, How did NGC publish that two months before they went on sale and three months before the "discovery" coin was submitted? Now that is FAST! I suspect that NGC publication date is a typo (NGC's typo not 19Lyds) and was supposed to be 5/9/2008.

I agree with Conder... I recall it being early May.

NGC's report was in May, the coins were discovered and Coin World announced it in April.
