Hey everyone i recently bought a my first dansco album for wheat cents. I was wondering if the coins will tone any strange colors over a long amount of time while in the holder. Will my red cents turn brown? will my brown cents tone some odd color? thanks for any info sorry i spelled question wrong
Not sure if the album will actually turn red to brown, but just not storing the coins correctly will turn red to brown quicker. Red to brown actually happens to graded coins - even though I have not seen one do that. I like my dansco album, but I have it for large cents - so nothing to worry about turning brown(well at least one polished coin I hope turns brown). Just my opinion.
i was mainly concerned about my rarer cents losing their value due to unnatural toning or anything like that but i'm pretty sure i'm just being paranoid
Lots of album collectors hope their coins take on attractive colors. That's why some of the older albums are in demand. If you have coins you want to keep their current appearance consider Intercept holder and store them properly. Lance.
i'm considering doing this with my indian head cent collection but then again they are not high grade so...hmmm
I started using the Dansco albums when they first came out and still do. I learned a few lessons from it. In my opinion, Red and RB copper should not be stored in these albums. They will darken over time. They may also gain spots from the cardboard dust from the album. Proofs of any type metal can also gain spots as well. For the most part, brown copper is safe, if the album is stored away from high humidity and temperature swings. Copper needs to stay dry. Coins that have been messed with in the past and put in an album can do crazy things. Sometimes a cleaned copper coin will gain a little more of a natural look after years in an album. After saying all that, I still keep an album going for Memorial cents. They look great in the album and I have little invested in it. Just my thoughts.
thanks this really helps. i think that dansco will be perfect for my indian head cents as most are either brown cleaned or damaged. makes me wonder what to do with my red wheat cents in the dansco tho .. maybe take em out and switch em with brown ones any buy something else to store the red ones in ? hmm i guess i'll figure something out.
