where can i find an accurate price guide for error coins, the big error dealers want thousands for their errors, and pcgs slabbed ones go for a bit, loose, or raw coins a lot less, but i would like to have an accurate guide, so i do not overpay..any help?? thanks john
There is no accurate guide published. For the most part, it is based on what a buyer is willing to pay. ~ Chris
Accurate is not going to happen. Experience is what is needed. It takes years for someone who wants to start collecting Mint Errors to understand the trends in prices. I can share this information. A list of prices for many of the major Mint Errors found at the Mint Error News website. https://www.minterrornews.com/priceguide.html Quote - "This price guide is a guide. Prices fluctuate due to the date, grade, eye appeal and how dramatic the striking error is. Rarity is also a factor. The price is sometimes based on the rarity and grade of the type of coin as well as how rare the error is. The price can also vary depending on whether two collectors are bidding for the same rare major mint error. When purchasing a mint error, it is important to use multiple resources to determine value, as there are many mint errors that do not fit into one category." Closed quote But it does not list all the Mint Errors known. You also have on the bottom of the website past issues you can view. It provides a lot of information which will take a very long time to absorb!
One of the major error coin dealers has an archive section in his website. His sold prices are there as well. It may not reflect the most current market price, but pretty good reference. In addition, you can do a search there on your collecting criteria, like off-center quarter or obverse die cap, and see comparable prices.
struck through, off center, missing clad on dimes and quarters..that kind of thing...to give an example almost all the missing clad quarters i see slabbed and off ebay are 130-300 each, and loose one bidding and going for 30-50, so it is a bit confusing about true value...all help is appreciated, thanks guys!
Error coins are all pretty much unique. There may be pieces that are similar but each on is different. How do you have a price guide for thousands of unique items. Just imagine something simple like an off-center. How far off-center? And in whiich direction? Say you went in 5% increments. That is something like 18 increments in 24 different directions. That's 432 listings, with no consideration for grade or date/mintmark.
