Hello All, I have recently purchased a Quadrans of Trajan and had a question about a tiny green spot. But first, here is the coin: 98-117 AD Trajan Quadrans Obverse: Bust of Hercules R. Reverse: Boar R., SC under It’s quite the cute coin! I am slightly concerned about a small green patch on the bottom right of the reverse. Here are some closer photos: The first photo was before lightly scratching with a toothpick, and the second image is after scratching with a toothpick. Almost all of the green patch came off when after scratching with the toothpick. Do you think this is the beginnings of Bronze Disease or just lightly coated verdigris? If yes, what should I do? Thanks!
Do you know its origin? It seems these Hercules / boar Trajanic quadrantes were minted for circulation in a certain region of the Empire...
TRAJAN AE Quadrans OBVERSE: IMP CAES NERVA TRAIAN AVG, laureate head right, slight drapery on far shoulder REVERSE: She-wolf crouching left, SC in ex. Struck at Rome, 98-117 AD 2.6g, 16mm RIC 694, Cohen 340, BMC 1061 TRAJAN AE Quadran OBVERSE: IMP CAES TRAIAN AVG GERM, diademed bust of Hercules right with lion-skin on neck REVERSE: Boar walking right, SC in ex. Struck at Rome, 98-117 AD 2g, 14mm RIC 702
I believe it was minted in Rome, but not meant to be circulated much further (I could definitely be wrong though). I do own a Dupondius of Trajan minted in Rome and meant to circulate in Syria. Trajan had a series of coins meant for circulation in Syria. Dupondius Trajan 114-117 AD 11.29g O: Radiate Bust R., IMP CAES NER TRAIANO OPTIMI AVG GERM R: SC within wreath, DAC PARTHICO P M TR POT XX COS VI PP - SC I really love the desert patina on this one. Trajan really knew how to make coins!
I love the She-wolf reverse quadrans. Quadrans Trajan 98-117 AD O: Trajan Bust Right, IMP CAES NERVA TRAIAN AVG R: She-wolf crouching left, SC in exergue Mines seen better days, but I love its patina. I actually bought it misidentified as the Hercules/Boar reverse. I’ve started thinking about amassing a little collection of quadrans…
