    So I as a fairly new collector, I have decided that I'd like to put together a year set from 1910 (my daughter was born in 2010 and I got her a Silver Proof Set from 2010) and would like to put together a set showing her US Coins from 100 years before she was born. So that is a wheat penny, Barber Dime, Barber Quarter, Barber Half. I have a couple of questions.

    1) The Mint didn't produce a silver dollar that year, are there suggestions for something to replace the dollar.
    2) I don't have alot to spend at this point but I'd like to have the coins show some level of detail, what type a grade should I be looking for? VG, F or what?

    Any suggestions would be welcomed
    Thanks

    Totally depends on your budget.

    To get a good level of detail i would shoot for VF condition;
    however some of the coins would not be that expensive in AU condition.

    In lieu of $1 coin why not a 1910 $2.5 Gold Indian, you can pick one up in the $300 range.
    That would be a real conversation piece as so few American have ever seen an old US gold coin.

    If you wanted to get even more exotic;
    you could double the time before her birth year and buy a 200 year old US Coin

    One possibility would be an 1810 Capped Bust Half Dollar; that could be found for perhaps $100 in fine condition.
    It's a large coin (larger than the half dollars of today) and pretty striking.

    It might peak your childs interest in U.S. history as they get older;
    and certainly could be a cool family heirloom.

    I like the idea of the 1910 $2.5 Gold Indian, Thanks WingedLiberty

    and I would include a 1910 Liberty Nickel, I forgot that in my earlier post

    The gold idea is cool...
    Also, the Morgan dollar was circulating in 1910, so even though it wouldn't be dated as such, any older, common date would be 'correct' for 1910 pocket change.

    Hard to believe, but in 1910 the Lincoln cent would have been FAR outnumbered in your pocket change when compared to the Indian cent. Think about the Sheild cent today vs the number of Memorials in your pocket, and it would be the same scenario.

    I bought a set 1909 for $30 at a nearby antique shop. It was obviously put together, and not from the mint :)

    But for $30 i was pretty happy. :)

    Went to my first coin show today, and bought my second coin and with that got started on my 1910 set.

    It was a V nickel and hopefully I didn't do to bad with it. I feel pretty ok about my start, hopefully it went better than the first coin I got. 1910 V Nickel.jpg 1910 V Nickel B.jpg
