I picked this coin up on EBAY a year ago very cheap, as it has an interesting background, an area in the Roman Forum was excavated in 1950 to reveal a sacred spot that was said to be struck by lightning, it become a place for money lenders hence the coin implements shown on the coin my coin is a hammer but I believe there is other implements, I would be interested if any of you have this coin. My coin AR Denarius 62 BC, Bon Event, Libo, 3.8gm RRC 416/1.
Good pickup @Ancient Aussie. I happen to have one: L SCRIBONIUS LIBO ROMAN REPUBLIC; GENS SCRIBONIA AR Denarius OBVERSE: BON EVENT LIBO, diademed head of Bonus Eventus right REVERSE: PVTEAL above, SCRIBON below, well-head ornamented with garland and two lyres, hammer at base Rome 62 BC 3.2g, 18mm Cr416/1a., Scribonia 8a
I have one too @Ancient Aussie, with hammer too. And you are right, there are others with tongs and with anvil, more scarce as far as I remember. It would be fun to put the three of them together L. Scribonius Libo, Denarius Rome mint, 62 BC BON EVENT LIBO, head of Bonus Eventus right PVTEAL SCRIBON, the puteal scribonianum, ornamented with garland between two lyres and hammer 3.95 gr Ref : RCV # 367, RSC, Scribonia # 8a Q
Cool posts!! I grabbed an example months ago as well; Lyres/garland and hammer type--no tongs or anvil:
I am posting as, so far, I hold the record for having the most worn and touched L SCRIBONIUS LIBO AR denarius! The most Ancients have touched mine... RR L Scribonius Libo 62 BCE AR Denarius Puteal Scribonianum Sear 367 Craw 416-1 Obv-Rev.jpg
I have tongs. I believe the order of rarity is hammer being most common, then tongs, then anvil. The anvil, fwiw, just looks like a lump or rock. The hammer and tongs are cooler.
Great coins everyone, mine is low relief, it might be why they are expensive in good detail. Most being low relief subject to more wear. I have seen the tongs looking different to the one you have Carthago shaped like tweezers, but are yet to see anvil. I will have a look in archives and post them if I see them.
I found a couple like yours Carthago and a only two anvil's and yes a couple of hundred dollars more than the hammer type.
I was happy to win this example of the type at yesterday's CNG sale of Andrew McCabe duplicates for well below (pun unintended) estimate. I imagine the banker's mark on the obverse kept some bidders away, but personally, I really like this particular mark and its placing. ROMAN REPUBLIC L. Scribonius Libo AR Denarius. 3.79g, 19mm. Rome mint, 62 BC. Crawford 416/1c; Sydenham 928; Scribonia 8b; Type as RBW 1502. O: Diademed head of Bonus Eventus right; LIBO behind; BON EVENT before. R: Puteal Scribonianum (Scribonian Well), decorated with garland and two lyres; anvil at base; PVTEAL above; SCRIBON in exergue. Ex Andrew McCabe Collection This is the variety with the rare anvil control symbol at the base of the well. I know it was commented by someone up-thread that tongs and hammers as control symbols on this issue are cooler, and that the anvils just don't rock (looking at @Carthago ), but in answer to that, I will simply submit the following... That pun intended .
Good on you zumbly I was watching that one and the Concordia one beside it, you definitely got the best buy.
Thanks! Did you manage to pick up anything? The one with the Concordia bust was nice too, but honestly, I had about a dozen coins from that group of McCabe coins on my list of targets and only managed to win this one.
No I didn't participate in this one, I have two main problems with the CNG auctions the first at the moment is the exchange rate and the other is ongoing as their auctions typically finish 2-3AM and it is so hard getting up at that time, even when I set the alarm, I decide to hard to get up. I usually get up at about 4-5AM when the horse has bolted.
