Just wondered if any one had any ideas on this large medal. It is 4 & 1/2 inches across and weights apx 1 & 1/2 lbs. The front says VOLCANUS. I do not see a makers name anywhere. I know the roman numerals on the back are 1881 and 1956 so I am guessing it is commemorating the 75th anniversary of something. Any ideas? Any help is greatly appreciated.

It looks like one of those commemorative art medals. It could be from Italy by the looks of it.

I have been looking and have found nothing even close. The person I bought it from said he purchased 2 of them 20 years ago and he was keeping the other but he sold this one for $3 so he must have gotten them pretty cheap.

    Fast:
For $3 how could you go wrong, it will be fun to study the piece.

]Im being to wonder if maybe these weren't made special for someone. Everything I look up is usually only half the size of those. When I try searching adding volcanus or R&P, I get nothing.
Volcanus was a God of fire and metal workers and was considered a protector.

Or, maybe this is a piece made for a Roman Volcanalia festival.

Well this is a bit trivial, and doesn't really help you at all, but,
I know a guy that looks exactly like that! When I saw the thumbnail of the pic I was like 'wow, thats crazy',
and when I clicked it to see the bigger pic I was like, 'Jeez, that even looks more like him now!'
Bone structure, the look on his face, just kinda weird.
Sorry, I know that didnt help, but I just had to say something...

Well the dates are 1881 and 1956, so it is the 75th anniversary of something.

Thanks again for all the help. It sure looks like you are on the right trail. R&P (Rochester & Pittsburgh) and the co. was founded in 1881.

didn't find the 'actual' one you have, but everything I read points to it being a paperweight like the one above. In 1956 companies were producing paperweights as a form of advertisement.

They all seem to sell for the above price, so looks like you got a bargain there :)
