Found this in my mint purchased roll of uncirculated 2014D halves. Stood out immediately as quite different. Instead of frosty cartwheel luster, it has prooflike mirror surfaces! How would you grade it?
Nary a hazard of a guess from those photos. Shoot 'em dead on and not an an angle. That stated (written) I've a few knarleys of my own forsaken from mint rolls.
First ones struck maybe? I have found a few coins that exhibit this feature I think. I keep them anyway cause they do stand out..
The coin, while mirrored, does not have mirrors deep enough to garner a PL designation in my opinion.
Either the very first coins struck from a die or those first few pieces after a die has been polished while in use will tend to have PL surfaces.
The photos are poor for sure, but it appears to have mint frost in the fields. The mirrors also don't look very strong.
I found 2 1998D that sure are tonight. They knocked two coins out of my whitman books. They took the top two spots. Stunners.
If the coins are reasonably high in grade, MS65 or higher (and maybe a bit lower), the coins would likely command a premium. If you decide to submit them to a TPG, only NGC will designate them as PL of the top two services at least. PCGS will not Edited: I can't PM you for some reason, but if you can get them designated as MS65 PL by NGC, I would have an interest in them if you don't decide to keep them.
I will post a picture of them later. I would not be sending them on to a TPG. I will however go through my box as I think I have some other PL. They were just too nice to throw back. Remind me over the weekend
MS65 PL, but photos tend to overemphasize marks compared to an in hand inspection with PL coins. If you think your coin has cleaner surfaces, I think it would be worth submitting.
