Hello all, there is something I havent been able to understand for a while. I have 2 proof sets, and some single proof coins: i have a 1999 and 1987 proof set. The 1999 set has toning on the penny, nickel, and half dollar. the '87 set has virtually nothing. My single proof coins - from the early 80's and even 60's have no toning as well. I was wondering why the newer proof set has toned a little? dont get me wrong, i love it! but i was wondering why the older ones havent.
I have the same issue with my proof sets as well. I think it has to do with the material composition of the holder, which can change from year to year, and the "airtightness" of the holder. I even have proof sets from the same year that tone differently. I agree toning is not a bad thing, but on some of my sets spots are developing. I think that is caused by a small piece of paper or some foreign material that gets on the coin when it is encapsuled. Dan
I concur with dan, and add that humidity and heat can also affect the toning of the proof coins differently even if they are stored in the same place
yeah, Ive had them in the same box since I got them. I was also thinking, as mentioned, it might have to do with the "air tightness"
OK, but did you get them directly from the mint yourself or did you buy from a dealer or another individial ? I ask that because if you didn't get them directly from the mint then the toning could be because whoever had them before you did not store them properly.
I got them as a gift from my uncle - who got them directly from the mint. he had them no longer than a month before he gave them to me. and its not like i mind, i like the toning on the 99 set just wondering why
Then there are 3 possibilities, it could be how your uncle stored them for that month, it could be how you store them now, or it could be that the coins were not rinsed properly at the mint before they were packaged. You have to remember that coins are affected in regard to toning by "where" they are. Environmental conditions can vary greatly in every house in the same town. And if the house are in different states, they can vary even more. So if your various Proof sets were not all stored in exactly the same environmental conditions and for eaxctly the same amount of time, then it stands to reason that they will all tone differently.
