Hello, I just bought 10 proof sets on ebay but they have scratched/cracked cases & also doesn't have the boxes they come in. Does anyone know where I can buy empty proof set cases & boxes? Heres the sets I got coming.... 1968 s 1969 s 1970 s 1980 s 1981 s 1982 s 1972 s (4 of these sets) Thanks, Dano
No Charlie, they are not sealed. Proof set cases from the US Mint merely snap together and can be easily opened and reclosed.
Not wanting to argue, but what makes you think so ? Sealed how ? I collected Proof sets for a great many years and never had a problem opening a single one of them. All I ever had to do was place the edge of a knife at the joint of the two pieces, give a gentle twist, and they always opened right up. They used snap-lock cases - press them together, pry them apart.
I have cracked a lot of 68-72 proof set cases and none of them would snap back together. I thought the Mint used some kind of sonic sealer like the TPG's use. Charlie
I just did an 85 set and it was just like cracking a slabbed coin. Wont go back together & cracked in 4 or 5 spots & I used a butter knife. Man thats a scary time- knives & breaking acrylic , I was almost sure it was going to scratch the coins.
Thanks All :smile I guess I wont crack them open until I find the right cases. Charlie i'll take you up on the offer... Thanks.
