This may be a dumb question for you that know, but I haven't figured it out yet. I have several 1940 & 1941 MS quality red coins. I see that the Philidelphia coins are both business and proof. My question is how do you tell the difference from one to the other ?

    Those are uncs.

    Not proofs.

Proofs (for these years) will have a mirror finish, wide rims, full strikes, and other characteristics.

As Frank said, your coins are regular business strikes, not proofs. The easiest way to tell is the proofs will have a mirror finish. Still unsure, look at pictures on ha.com and/or ebay. The difference will become obvious.
