i just bought $5.00 assorted silver coins from mintproducts.com . i received a few some Franklins, one appears mirror like (over whole coin-whole coin has sa,e finish) and coin 2 appears to be prooflike. Pictures 3/4 are of mirror like coin(do you think it is proof or cleaned...i think its too much reflective/mirror like to be an unc...pics 1/2 are what i believe to be proof. what do you guys think, any thoughts appreciated. are they jusr scrap silver to store in rolls or are they worth holding on to?
Do the rims on both coins appear to be square or rounded? If they're square, they're proofs. If they're rounded, they're business strikes that have been buffed to have a PL appearance. Hard to tell from your pics as the clarity is not the best. But the second coin looks like a proof.
Look at the rims..... I thought #1 might be a good candidate for 'proof' but like BU said (in so many words) the pics are lacking........
The rim, near the edge. Proof coins have a square rim-edge, and business strikes are round. Where the red arrow is pointing:
They are both proofs. The first one has a nice cameo reverse, the result of a fresh die. It's hard to give a grade from the image, but I would guess them to be in the PR64/65 range.
They look to be impaired Proofs to me. And if you bought them as part of some assortment pack that would explain they were in the pack to begin with.
I was happy with it. I bought it more for the silver content, but if you are newer to collecting you will definitely get a nice mixture for the money. You can request more of a specific coin if you want also. by impaired proof do you mean low grades? Should I keep them in my scrap silver box since they for have much numismatic value, or would you say they are worth keeping separate?
An impaired Proof is a Proof coin that has been in circulation and that would grade below PF60; or, one that has been damaged in some way so that it would no longer be gradeable. Those have no value to speak of other than silver content.
