So I've searched 2 boxes of half dollars and the first box turned up 1 proof (72s) and no silver. The second box turned up 12 proofs but still no silver. This really shocked me because proofs only show up if someone takes apart a proof set. I mean how common is it to find a proof coin in a box?
They're out there, obviously, but from what I understand I'm not sure I would say it's a common occurrence. Some will say they're from junior stealing poppa's coins for ice cream or dope, but so many are worth so little money it's not uncommon for them to simply be spent (when a set is broken up, etc) as any other coin, or intentionally placed into circulation.
I search boxes of halves often and I agree 13 proofs in 2 boxes is a bit unusual, with or without any silver. I do find them frequently though, recently I've found a Statue of Liberty Proof Half, a Christopher Columbus Proof, and several misc. dates in the last 3 boxes I searched
Searched a few rolls yesterday. In one roll that was short a buck, there was a very nice 1989 s Proof Kennedy half. Sweet coin.
